She's a grade school librarian and in one of her first-grade classes, she was reading a cute story featuring a cute little hedgehog. In the course of the story, the hedgehog is attending a school taught by a cat and all of her friends were other cute little animals. An interesting (and did I mention, cute?), anthropomorphic stew.What was funny, though, was the fact that this little hedgehog from the story had a pet dog. Most of the children in first grade class had no problem with it all, but one little girl raised her hand and asked my wife this question:How can a hedgehog have a dog?Up until then, my wife hadn't really given that story much thought. It didn't fit the framework of the story and for the little girl, it broke her suspension of disbelief.She touched on something very important...something that a lot of writers (and readers) miss. Even the smallest of breaks for the silliest of reasons can ruin your story for your readers.Personally, I'm thinking that the little girl will probably end up like me some day, ranting about preserving the integrity of the story's world from meddling authors.

I have been sick yet again and yes I have actually seen the Dr. If anyone knows me they know I so do not go to the Dr's so it must be bad right? Well they don't know. So on the way out he tripped and sloshed flaming hot grease on his right arm and then fell in the living room. Yeah, yet again anyone who know me knows I live in flip flops. I know you don' t have to tell me how not smart that was I got 2ND degree burns on my foot. I know I'm dumb. Needless to say I have been run ragged helping mom clean as she can't get down on the floor to do it and then helping with everything else and taking care of step dad while mom worked. I go for another test next week and school starts next week and step dad is doing good on his own now so maybe just maybe I can regain some normal. I have turned the heel on my 2ND jaywalker, and I crocheted some swiffer covers (quick Dr office projects:-) I'm thinking about making the Hallowig from knitty but I don't know if I have the energy right now to start something new. Once I know what's wrong with me and if I get out of this funk I will blog more then as well.

October First is coming up fast, and nobody knows it more than the three kids who will be playing the title role in the new Billy Elliot musical that begins performances on Broadway that evening. Yep, the role is so demanding, that they’ve got three kids rotating through the performances throughout the week, so that none of them will ever have to do two shows back to back. By the first performance the three kids will have been in rehearsals for four months, plus two months before that just to get fit for the role. (Let me tell you from experience, singing and dancing onstage for nearly three hours takes stamina.) Once the rest of the cast arrived, they basically had to rehearse the show three times, once for each Billy.

To my dismay, I created it a size smaller than what I normally wear. So what brings me sadness will hopefully bring someone else lots of joy.I was able to photograph it today after work. By the time I arrived home from work there was just enough sun left.This ring was created with Art Clay Silver. Art Silver Clay is a combination of fine silver (.999 silver), organic binders and water. After firing it in my kiln, the organic binders dissipate and what is left is 99.9% fine silver.I also created the dichroic glass that serves as the focal point of this ring. A layer of dichroic glass was placed on a base of green glass.This ring is a hair shy of 3/4 in length. Anyone who reads my blog may remember that I've been receiving rejection after rejection for my short film, Without / Within, as well as for my short stories. In fact, today I submitted a spec script for CSI (don't judge me) to the WILDsound spec script competition and tomorrow I'll be mailing off a feature film script called Chancetown to the New York City Horror Film Festival. Right now, after submitting two projects to contests and festivals, finishing another short story, and receiving such support and encouragement from those two and the rest of my friends and family, I think I could take on another year's worth of rejections.

So, when I heard that Woodfire Grill's Owner and Chef, Michael Touhy, was selling Woodfire Grill to move back to his home state of California, I felt sad and stupid. Ugh.I figured it would be fitting somehow to make my first dinner at Woodfire Grill Touhy's last dinner there. and ETK.Each table had the option of ordering a 3 course meal for 8 or a 5 course meal for 5. We chose the 3 course meal since we knew we had to leave room in our budgets for wine.For the first course, I had trouble deciding between the Insalata Caprese or the Smoked Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho. Although the young guy driving it nearly swamped it trying to make a 180 degree turn at full speed, burying the nose in the water.This chipmunk was hanging out in a tree near the stairs that lead from the beach up to the cabin.On our tour of Park Rapids Linzy and I got turned around in road construction and ended up stopping at a random park and doing some hiking around on the trails.After Park Rapids we still had some time to kill, and decided to go up to Itasca state park to see the Mississippi headwaters.Amazingly, that is the entire headwaters.

I found a decent laptop in one of the apartments and I'm writing this blog entry from the rooftop of my apartment complex. I don't know how many zombies looked up at the roof when I threw the hammer through it, but by the time I squeezed between and over the broken glass and got to my feet on the slanted rooftop, almost all of them were stumbling toward me. Now the zombies are a shapeless, morphing form.What happened after I got onto the roof is I examined the road and then went to see if any zombies were inside the gate, if they were walking around the resident parking lot. The zombies wandering around the parking lot might have come in through the gate -- though if it's been open for nineteen days I would expect more -- or they could be residents who wandered out of their homes. They don't have the nice TV that I do, but that's okay because only three self-sustaining television channels are still on the air, plus that CNN channel they started up from one of the safe-zones in New York that has been repeating the same information for three or four days since it started up.I had to drop down to a different balcony on the other side of the building to get to the second apartment. I stepped back and watched him watching me, putting his mouth against the window and screeching his teeth against the glass. And then I realized that his moaning was drawing the attention of the zombies from the parking lot -- all of a sudden I turned around and two of them were trying to climb the staircase. So I just climbed back onto the roof and forgot about that apartment.I figure this new apartment -- Apartment #5 -- has enough supplies to keep me alive for a long time. I'm not about to fight a zombie with a kitchen knife, though, so until I get my hands on a real gun I don't think I'll even worry about that second apartment. Something about killing someone -- even a zombie -- still seems beyond me.That all said, I think I'll go back inside.

It can be extremely frustration at times and the difficulty, athleticism, and beauty of ballet and dance is greatly underestimated by society. The goal in dance is to make the steps your doing look easy and effortless and I think that it this could be a significant reason for the underestimation of the art. An example of this is that my own father had never seen a ballet performance before I started dance but has watched countless sports games. For the rest of the population and arts community who have taken advantage of the art form, it can really have a great impact on someone’s life. Ballet has also put me through a rough, rocky road and character building process due to the endless stereotypes about male ballet dancers. To name a few: all male dancers are gay, ballet is for girls only not guys; making male dancers rejects of society (especially in children), and guy dancers are just weird.

Hey again,Today, we're going to take a look at a quirky little command (The use of the term quirky is my personal bias creeping in ;) called pidof that you can, absolutely, find on RedHat ES versions 4 and up. It's probably on lots of other distro's, too, but I can only afford to muck with what's in the free-server-pool at any given moment. This command is actually very interesting and, given that RHEL3 boasts the pgrep command, I was quite surprised when I bumped into it. I'm not sure if it seemed contradictory or complementary; just unexpected.pidof, as the name would suggest, is a program that will find the process id (PID) of a running program (or the PID's of programs). Again, just like its name, it finds the pid of a running process. I'm just repeating this over and over again because the name is so self explanatory is seems contrary to everything I've come to expect from Linux and Unix (od, bc, dc, nm, ar, etc.. &;-- Literally etcetera. There's no program, that I know of, named etc yet ;)Normally, I would blow a command like this off and stick with what I know; relegating it to that place in the back of my mind so cluttered with mental detritus that it's bound to all crumble apart sooner or later ;) As luck, or a fate I couldn't possibly avoid, would have it, this command does have some interesting (if not puzzling) features and an even more interesting lineage (skip to the bottom of the post for the most bizarre thing about it ;).In it's basic form, you use it much like you might use pgrep. For instance:host # pidof dsmadmc27937 27927 27921 27918 24324 15596 11970 17360the output format is somewhat different (horizontal rather than vertical) and more limited, but the results are relatively equal. You've just pulled a list of PID's that have, in this case, the string dsmadmc in them. It should be noted that pidof's standard mode of operation is like using pgrep with the -x option. It only returns exact matches and not substring matches. It should also be noted that, unlike pgrep, you can specify more than one program on the command line without making any major changes. I usually have to opposite problem, where I want to cram too much in each chapter, so I've had a hard time dealing with the feeling that I don't know what's going on.

Martha stayed later than planned on Wed b/c Bryan was out and it was obvious I didn't have a plan on how to keep Esther happy and get Adeline bathed and into bed. Start OverOne morning I woke up happy and enjoyed playing with my kids that day. 2 days later I woke up having just spread his ashes and facing going through his things and watching his life get parted out and walk away. I woke up sad and dreading that day wishing it would end quickly. Who could have known when I started each of those days that they would have ended in that manner? And if these things are possible then why not others on days where I wake and follow the script society has left by my bed for me to act out. And as it got closer and I lived out each day, each month, each night of anger and pain, when the day came that it was no longer mine, who could have known the freedom and joy I would feel on knowing it was no longer my problem? Start over.I had to buy groceries and pay bills and the day started with coffee and dread. Would you say that’s a good day?Last night I went to bed having lived 2 days in one and my work incomplete, my husband recovering from surgery. Because those toys were put there by a boy that one day won’t live here anymore and that phone call will be someone who will probably earn me money. And when my husband is gone to work and I sit down with my coffee, to write and hear the silence in our home as my babies sleep, I know it’s a good day. Any day writing, any day with coffee and any day that begins with my husband’s face is a good day to start over. And tomorrow you can wake up knowing that today is the day that you are filling your water bottle and preparing to drink more water. And you made it yet another day closer to feeling sexy and beautiful.So if you woke up today and knew you wouldn’t get to the laundry again, why not start over?

Brian drained the pond the other night and cleaned it out...I still need to grab a few hosta plants from the office (they're growing around the garage that we will be tearing down soon). After the plants and rocks, I'll be able to mulch (this time, we'll be buying it by the truckload--I plan on mulching the entire side of the yard from the dog area to the property line in the back yard).
